Blending backgrounds in communication and education with more than 20 years experience in horticulture, landscape planning, and ecological design, Theresa Sprague founded BlueFlax Design LLC in 2009 with the aim of merging science with fine art of landscape design to create beautiful and sustainable landscapes, restoring ecological function and integrity to the built environment, while thoughtfully creating habitat that supports the needs of both people and wildlife. In addition to her work at BlueFlax Design, Theresa also serves as President of the Ecological Landscape Alliance, and as Vice Chair and Trustee at the Conway School. Theresa holds a BA (Summa Cum Laude) from the University of Massachusetts, and a Masters Degree in Ecological Design.

Janice Schmidt is an accomplished designer with a background in product design, interior architecture, and landscape design. After receiving her BS in Industrial Design from the University of Cincinnati, Janice worked as a product designer in the plastic housewares industry before transitioning to residential and commercial interior design. In both of these fields she focused on accessibility and functionality, receiving several patents for her housewares designs. This focus on accessible, functional, and sustainable design continued through her transition to landscape design, which has been her true passion for the last ten years. In 2015 she earned an MS in Ecological Design, and joined BlueFlax Design LLC the following year. She is dedicated to improving landscapes to make healthier places for people and the environment.
Emma Vautour | Designer email@example.com
Emma joined BlueFlax Design in 2017. In addition to a BS in Environmental Science and an MS in Ecological Design, Emma brings with her a varied background in native plant cultivation, desert and wetland restoration, and western rangeland conservation. Her work has brought her to many parts of the country from the Great Lakes in Michigan, to big sky country of Wyoming, and to the Mojave Desert of southern California. Emma enjoys blending her devotion to environmental restoration with her appreciation of art and beauty in the natural world.
Pete Tubman | Environmental Technician Field Manager
A native Cape Codder, Pete brings twelve years of experience working in landscaping and ecological restoration after twelve years in the excavation/construction industry, and cumulatively twenty-five years of experience operating heavy equipment. Over the years, Pete has been involved in a multitude of successful coastal stabilization, invasive plant removal, and native plant restoration projects throughout the Cape and Islands area. Pete is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys rising to the challenges of hard work and problem-solving that are required in restoration work. Pete holds a Massachusetts CDL, hoisting license, OSHA occupational safety and health certificate, and invasive plant management certificate.
Mike Tanis | Environmental Technician & GIS Specialist
A USMC veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, Mike attended Rutgers University and received a B.S. in Ecology, Natural Resources and Marine Science, and a certificate in Geographic Information Sciences. He spent five years working for the National Park Service as a biologist and cartographer mapping coastal erosion and researching salt marsh and estuarine ecology. He has a Massachusetts pesticide applicator license and an Invasive Plant Management Certificate from University of Massachusetts.
Ben White | Environmental Technician
Growing up in Wareham, Ben spent a lot of time outdoors on the Cape. He is passionate about working with nature and improving environmental quality. Ben attended a four-year technical high school with a focus in environmental science. While in high school he received his OSHA 10-hour and OSHA 40-hour certifications. He holds Firefighter 1 and 2 certifications from the Massachusetts Fire Academy. Ben is also a license Massachusetts pesticide applicator.
Jill Benelli | Environmental Technician
Jill graduated from Champlain College with a BA in Human Services. She joined BlueFlax Design in 2017 after a ten-year career in social work focused on working with at-risk youth, adults with MR and Autism, and seniors with Alzheimers and Dementia. Jill is motivated to make a positive impact, whether through providing individual care or caring for the environment. A lifelong outdoor and nature enthusiast, Jill continues to enjoy gaining the knowledge and experience that comes from working in the field of environmental restoration and landscaping. She is a licensed Massachusetts pesticide applicator.
